Audio CD Description

In Outlander, a 600-page time-travel romance, strong-willed and sensual Claire Randall leads a double life with a husband in one century, and a lover in another. Torn between fidelity and desire, she struggles to understand the pure intent of her heart. But don't let the number of pages and the Scottish dialect scare you. It's one of the fastest reads you'll have in your library.

While on her second honeymoon in the British Isles, Claire touches a boulder that hurls her back in time to the forbidden Castle Leoch with the MacKenzie clan. Not understanding the forces that brought her there, she becomes ensnared in life-threatening situations with a Scots warrior named James Fraser. But it isn't all spies and drudgery that she must endure. For amid her new surroundings and the terrors she faces, she is lured into love and passion like she's never known before.

I was lame and sore in every muscle when I woke next morning. I shuffled to the privy closet, then to the wash basin. My innards felt like churned butter. It felt as though I had been beaten with a blunt object, I reflected, then thought that that was very near the truth. The blunt object in question was visible as I came back to bed, looking now relatively harmless. Its possessor [Jamie] woke as I sat next to him, and examined me with something that looked very much like male smugness."
Gabaldon creates characters that you'll remember, laugh with, cry with, and cheer for long after you've finished the book. --Candy Paape

Customer Reviews

My most beloved book...

When my mother read this series and raved about it I thought she was a little loony; she spoke as if she actually knew the characters in the book. But then, I was bored and picked up Outlander and was hooked. I LOVE THIS BOOK! Others have picked it apart, called the charaters wooden, and the situations unrealistic.... It's fantasy people! I fell in love with Jamie as have thousands of others, and have recommended this book to countless people. I am, at this very moment, re-reading this series for the third time.

And just as an aside... the 1700s are the 18th century, people. This book does not take place in 17th century Scotland... It takes place in 18th century Scotland!

I don't get it!!?

I purchased this book because of the great reviews and the fact that it was listed as the number one romance novel of all time by readers in a Romance Reader web I was browsing through (never listening to their advice again). What a big disappointment!! It was way too long, too detail-oriented and we really didn't need the "hero" to go through all of that torture for us to be compassionate about him or his actions! I agree with the May 8 review by "Anonymous" -- I too was so disgusted toward the end of the book. I actually had nightmares! I finished the book 6 days ago and I still can't stop cringing about it!! That's not my idea of a "feel good" read!! Don't waste your money folks!!

Amazing

One of the best books I've ever read. The character of Claire takes you through the story and you feel her frustration, fear, and indignance as if the experiences were your own. Every character in this story is well fleshed, even peripherals. Ms. Gabaldon's knowledge of 17th century Scotland is superb, as well as how she weaves the "modern" character of Claire into that day and age.
